My Poems, Prose and Prayers

Faith, Fish and Friends

Faith is something some have got;
Faith is something some have not.
It comes to those who believe and pray,
It grows stronger with each dawning day.

Fish are creatures of the sea,
Swimming through life's oceans, like you and me.
We as christian fish are caught in Jesus' net,
Our spiritual bait from Him we get.

Friends are those with whom our faults are secure;
Cultivated, nourished long to endure.
But of all the friends we make on this earth,
Friendship with Jesus has the greatest worth.

Our Lord's Invitation

Our journey starts with the invitation
Our earthly pilgrimage with the Crucifixion;
Our invite comes in the form of conversion,
Its acceptance leads to spiritual re-formation.

God's Word was made flesh and lives with us today
Walking with us, keeping the devil at bay;
We must accept Him, and grip His mighty hand
He will lead us, with Him, to the Promised Land.

Our Lady of the Path

How far is it to the end, the pilgrim sighed,
The solitary figure, sweating as he paused.
Sultry the noon, the clouds terrified,
Fled far distant, high pressure caused.

The spirit of pilgrimage aroused,
The taut legs shivered, driven by the sun.
Not another hill to be hurdled,
Yes, I will traverse this one.

The lady with neat hair, dressed in blue; where is she?
He shook his head, hesitated for her to pass.
Mercury aroused, seething another degree,
The heat haze clouded her face alas.

She was the very ridges that he must scale,
Exhausted on the rough summit; and how she smiled.
Now his strength would surge, not to fail,
Having her beside him - serene, assumed, undefiled.

This lady, as beautiful as the moon at her feet;
Our desire her son, in heaven to meet.

The Walk of Life

Through the woods, along ancient paths I would ramble:
On either side a throng of bluebells, a crowd of bramble.
Chinks of sunlight peek through the firs and beech,
On to God's wildlife - his special stamp on each.

I come to a crossroads; the crossroads of life.
Looking back on this vale of tears, of problems and strife;
With me all the way is the palm of God's hand,
Taking me with him to the promised land.

The Hill of Faith

The bottom of the hill, our lives of confusion and worry;
Our aim the summit, its ascent arduous and scary.

We climb, we fall back, we slip and we slide;
With satan in the greasy soil, and Jesus at our side.

The silence increases, the anxiety and turmoil decreases;
At the top of the hill, Paradise, our journey ceases.

The heavenly smells, the sincerity of prayer;
Behind, the footholds of faith, which helped us there.

Recalling our uncertainty, fear and doubt, we record,
At the top of that hill lies the certainty of God.

On Being - On Pilgrimage

In distilled simplicity I walk,
Seeking God in every glimpse
Which surrounds and permeates the Earth I stalk.

Pheasants, squirrels, rabbits, doves,
Trees, grasses, bushes and foxgloves
All speak to me of Our Lord above.

Nothing cluttered, nothing hurried,
Nothing noisy, nothing jarring,
Balance, rhythm and life tarried.

Time to search, time to listen,
Time to love, time to hasten
To Him who is the God of love.

A Prayer of Silence

Silence is but a small suffering for Our Lord;
The minute anguish of an averbal world,
The tiny sense of tension alone in a sea of tranquility;
Gone the feeling of frustration in front, behind and within me.
Lamb of God, take my sins and cleanse me,
Heal me and shield me from temptation;
In this sacred silence show me Jesus
My Lord and My God. Amen.

A Fraction Petition

Give me just a fraction of ...
The confidence of Our Lady at the Annunciation,
The wisdom of the Father at the Creation,
The strength of the Son at the Crucifixion,
The fulfilment of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost,
And the faith of Your Saints throught the ages. Amen.
